Dissolving Time

chewing
on slowly passing minutes
wandering thoughts
fill my day
like grey trees
fill a winter forest

no specific thing
grabs attention
nor compels an action
so I shuffle papers,
worry the beads,
fill spaces with lethargy
in otherwise
meaningless moments

self inflicted,
these entrapments
spend the time
I can’t afford to spend

in an interview
before inoperable cancer
took his music away,
Zevon gave this advice…
“Enjoy every sandwich”

I wonder what it will take
for me to find the conviction
to eat so well.
