First Quarter Progress Toward 2016 Goals

Writing and Publication

  • It seems that I am prone to make lots of little errors in my revision work as I found that I had duplicated sentences and paragraphs in each of the three sales manuscripts, inconsistencies in word and phrase usage, and some spelling errors.  I’ve spent the first quarter revising the three books. While working on one I find errors that may or not appear in the others. I thought I had finished revision of all three by mid-February but was incorrect in that assumption. I then spent the rest of the quarter re-working the three books. Only the Insight Sales (Retail) is fully done at the end but progress has been made on the other two as well. I’m disappointed in this lack of significant progress and feel substantial impatience to get them done so that I can pursue the remaining books that I have planned.
  • In the quarter, I met my daily Writing Goal by writing for at least 20 minutes in each of 63 days out of 91 days in the quarter, writing and revising for a total of 191 hours in that period. This is an average of 3 hours each day that I did write and revise.
  • I wrote six rough haibun drafts in the quarter but haven’t worked on them to produce presentable versions.
  • Although I am disappointed that I am not further ahead in this work, I do believe the books are getting better because of this persistence.

Photography

  • This first month has been so focused on the revisions of my books that I have only completed one photo shoot, and that was at the Seattle Aquarium. The images were not processed during the quarter and remain untouched on my hard drive.

Relationships

  • My mother has had substantial medical problems during this quarter requiring frequent support during visits to the doctor and the hospital. She spent the month of March in the Geriatric Assessment Unit at the Misericordia Hospital following another fall. She had four significant falls during this quarter. As a result of their diagnostics, they found no broken bones but some evidence of disease that is causing her to lose wait and grow more fragile.
  • I’ve spent considerable time with Quynn during weekend visits during this quarter.
  • I had the opportunity to attend the 70th birthday of Dianne Watson where we had a visit from Elvis and that was a lot of fun and it was good to see members of the Watson clan that I don’t see all that often.
  • I attended the concert for the World Famous Glen Miller band with Dianne and her mother Regina and truly enjoyed that experience despite my prior skepticism.

Travel

  • We managed a trip by truck through Radium, Osoyoos, and Seattle for eight days as we visited Lois Greenberg. This was a very enjoyable winter trip as we mostly had spring like weather.

Physical Well-Being
I’m relatively pleased with my progress on my well-being goals. I finished the quarter weighing 204 lbs and feeling like my clothes fit much more comfortably. I did this because of my daily focus on 9 specific . I had intended to meet the daily goals 86% of the time and did that on some but even those where I was less successful, the results were very satisfying.

I bought a FitBit Charge HR to track my physical activity and wore it for 89 of the 91 days of the quarter.

Annual Goals

  • I lost 16 pounds during the first quarter.
  • I walked and cross-country skied 731.91 km in the quarter, which is 45.74% of my annual goal of 1600 km during the year.

Conclusion

I’ve had a relatively successful first quarter, with my best performance being in terms of my daily focus on specific goals. This focus has changed my lifestyle for the better. I am particularly pleased that I was able to not eat after dinner 84.6% of the days and I think this has had the most positive impact on shedding my excess weight. I had some bad days and deliberately fouled them up as badly as I could so that disgust would motivate me to do better the next day. For the most part, that worked.
